14/05/2010  Science of the Time  Flowers of Democracy

STRETCHING THE BOUNDERIES BEYOND CONVENTIONS - "I would like to conclude this overview by quoting a specific manifestation by a designer that, in my view, captures the essence of the times we live in, and offers an ultimate synthesis of contemporary trends: the artwork "The Flowers of Democracy" by Stephanie Cobigo, painted in Paris and presented in the Netherlands, is a chromatically charged reference to the flowers by Vincent van Gogh, with dark electric blue and pink as its lead motives. At the same time, it is also a direct statement about the lack of equality in gender within the capitalism that brought us to financial distress and social unrest. Lastly, it is an artwork created by a designer, with the most natural connection of expertise and practices between these two domains. As this review of design trends was mostly textual and perhaps a bit abstract, I do like to conclude with this very graphic and ultimately vibrant sign of pure iconographic power, as the best statement of trust in the future of a diverse, hybrid and stylistically rooted evolution of design"
